HERBERT FRANKLIN TUCKER <1933> : : : : JOHN HENRY TUCKER, born and raised in Caroline County, Va,, built the : : first "sweet potato houses" on his property in Caroline Co., Va.. Other : : farmers, as far away as Culpepper, Va., used these houses. Sweet potato's : : were stored and cured in these houses for approximately 6 weeks. Stoves : : were used to keep a temperature of 70 degrees before they were then shipped : : to Washington, D.C. where they were later shipped to the Safeway Grocery : : Stores. The Tucker family raised about 2,000 bushels of sweet potatoes : : every year. : : John Henry Tucker would hire 12-15 men for two weeks every year, to help : : dig sweet potatoes. His wife <Florence Ellen Selph> prepared and served : : three meals a day for the workers. During the winter, in the deep snows, is : : when the sweet potatoes would sell the best. : : Crops of tobacco, cucumbers and corn were also raised in large : : quantities. The Tucker's had four horses they used in the early years for : : farming of the land. It was only in the later years that they got tractors : : to do the work. : : Corn and wheat was taken to Cppk's Mill to be ground. I remember my : : mother <Gladys Annie Tucker Garrison> talking about what a treat it was to : : trade a few eggs for a bag of candy at an old store near the mill, which is : : still standing. : : The 8 Tucker children had to walk about 2 miles to catch the bus to : : Sparta school. The first car John Henry bought was a 4 door, 1935 : : Chevrolet, which he bought for $999.00 from Blatt Chevrolet in Milford. That : : was a lot of money then and he paid for it in cash. : : John Henry and Florence Ellen Tucker were good, honest people. Often : : John Henry would say, "my word is my bond", and many business deals were : : made with just a handshake. : : The Tucker's had a lot of friends in Caroline County, and if anyone ever : : needed some help, everyone would pitch in. : : I can imagine how they felt while watching military jeeps and trucks : : passing by, for they knew it was the beginning of the government buying : : their land that they were so proud of and had worked so hard on... Now... : : they'd have to live somewhere else!!! : : John Henry Tucker was my grandfather and I am searching for his father's : : ancestors. I believe his father to be JOHN WESLEY TUCKER. born about 1837 : : in Maryland. He is listed in the U.S. Enrollment Records for Ann Arundel : : County, dated Oct 29, 1862., as being an "able-bodied male citizen"., in : : the 6th Election District of said county. His post office is listed as : : Friendship, Md. <another descendant of his believes he may have been from : : Saint Mary's Co., Maryland> . He is listed as having 'gone south', which : : indeed, he did! He enlisted in Capt. R. Snowden Andrew's 1st Maryland : : Artillery CSA in Fredericksburg, Va. on June 27, 1861. On April 7, 1862, in : : Caroline Co.,Va., he married FANNIE COVINGTON <1841or42-1924>, daughter of : : James Covington and Mary Chinault <sp?>. He was discharged from service at : : Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond on October 29, 1864.
